Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is both a martial art involving self-defence and a combat sport system. It focuses on grappling with a particular emphasis on ground fighting. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is founded on the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger and heavier opponent by using technique, leverage - and crucially - taking the fight to the ground. Joint locks and choke-holds are then utilized to defeat the opponent.
Gracie Jiu-Jitsu (GJJ) is considered a martial art, a sport, a method for promoting physical fitness and building character, and also a way of life. GJJ teaches skills that encourage personal development including respect, honor, loyalty and commitment, all the while enforcing a strong moral and ethical code. It improves confidence, patience, situational awareness, mental strength and the ability to think clearly and decisively under pressure.
